 GMU Center Introduction

The US Department of Defense funded creation of the George Mason University (GMU) Center for Online Workforce Development through a grant to the ADL Initiative. Founded in September 2009, the Center engages in research aimed at expanding the use of distributed education as an effective workplace tool for training and retraining workers.

Mission

The Center for Online Workforce Development is located in Fairfax, Virginia. Its mission is to promote and extend the use of online learning as a means to produce a more globally competitive workforce. The interdisciplinary academic research center is housed within the Office of the Vice President for Research at George Mason University. The Center:

  • Sponsors basic and applied research that will become the foundation for more widespread and more effective use of distributed learning technologies to train and retrain America’s workers 
  • Develops courses to take the knowledge of the university into the workplace and assist those seeking jobs, or looking to advance their careers, in select industries
  • Captures and shares best computer-based training practices
  • Hosts academic and public meetings and conferences
  • Forges partnerships with community colleges, trade associations, and others throughout the US, Virginia, and the Washington, DC region
  • Provides an internship program for GMU undergraduate, graduate, and professional students
